From the National Weather Service to the County of Santa Cruz, the authorities had been warning for days that the incoming swell was likely to mean up-to 30-foot seas on Dec. 28.

And after a wet Wednesday, the big Thursday sets didn't bring much in the way of precipitation. That was appreciated, as the significant quantity of water moving about was already keeping firefighters and other emergency personnel pretty busy. Multiple wave forecasters ultimately put the midday peak in the 20-25-foot range, although there were certainly outliers.
It sure was incredible to witness a handful of hardcore surfers making the most of Mother Nature's fury.
And as the size dropped slightly, towards the evening, it was cool to see others heading out for a piece of the action, too.
