Hellpoint is a new entry into the Souls-like side of Action RPGs with some serious problems but a streak of light shining through the whole thing. It's heavily flawed but at the same time, the more I played it, the more I enjoyed it. The sci-fi theme, complete with cosmic horrors, is a nice one, it's quite an open experience that trades fine control over pacing for a more wanderlust fueled exploration. Weapons come with their own skills that unlock as you use them, with everything from swords, to guns to occult tools having various skills you can learn which was a highlight for me, and there is a neat idea of the areas changing with the position of the black hole in the sky which adds to the intrigue. Unfortunately, the game doesn't explain much of anything to you, it's a bit buggy, the enemy variety is fairly low and the lack of a specific goal can make you unsure where to go next. It doesn't have a very good start, but it does become something a bit different as you play it, and I have to respect at least trying something different rather than playing it safe, even if it doesn't always land on its feet. I'm interested to see what Cradle Games will do next.
