Where the Ride Slows Down is a new e-Alps series dedicated to the places that shape our journeys across the Alps. Not just the trails and the passes, but the hotels, the people, and the valleys that give rhythm to each day on the route.
On multi-day alpine rides, where you stay matters. It’s where stories from the trail are shared. Where tired legs finally rest. Where the energy of the day shifts from movement to stillness.
Part One brings us to Hotel de la Sage in Val d’Hérens.
Built in 1890 and rooted deeply in the valley, the hotel is now run by Ine and Matthis, who live and work within its walls. Their presence defines the atmosphere. A small team. A panoramic salon. A terrace that catches the late light. A place where riders often order a drink before they even head to the shower.
Hotel de la Sage is one of our regular stops on the Verbier to Zermatt journey and on the Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt. When our routes lead into Val d’Hérens, this is where the day slows down.
In this conversation, Ine shares what makes this valley special, how the hotel has evolved over generations, and why places like this remain essential to the e-Alps experience.
Because sometimes the most memorable part of the ride is where it slows down.
