With the Fisherman’s Knot go around the cord twice making sure it bites both times. You don’t want to have any crosses and you’ll be able to use the knot to move up and down your cord.

A Prusik Knot is used when you want to attach a loop of cord around a rope in order to move safely up and down. It’s used primarily in climbing.
