Chinese war film 'Dongji Rescue', based on true WW2 tragedy, gets VJ Day premiere in London

Описание: Film "Dongji Rescue", a dramatic retelling of a little-known World War Two maritime tragedy involving British prisoners of war and Chinese fishermen, received its European premiere in London on Friday.

Attended by the movie's makers and stars and descendants of the real-life POWs, the red carpet event coincided with the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, which marks the Allied victory over Japan and the end of WW2.

"Dongji Rescue" is co-directed by Guan Hu, the filmmaker behind the 2024 Cannes Un Certain Regard winner "Black Dog" and Fei Zhenxiang.

The film, based on the 1942 sinking of the Japanese ship Lisbon Maru after it was torpedoed by American forces, is the moving story of Chinese fishermen from nearby Dongji Island courageously rescuing the over 1800 British POWs aboard the liner despite Japanese soldiers' firing.

With more than 40% of the film taking place underwater, the project was a technical feat for its makers.

Large-scale sets were built on location at Dongji island and the ship was recreated at full scale.

"Dongji Rescue" which opened in cinemas in China on August 8, will be released in the UK, Ireland and the United States on August 22, and in European theatres from August 29.
