The unfinished obelisk in Aswan, Egypt, provides a fascinating glimpse into ancient Egyptian stone-carving techniques, particularly through the scoop-like marks visible on its surface. This obelisk, likely commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut, would have been the largest of its kind had it been completed, towering around 42 meters high and weighing an estimated 1,200 tons. However, it was abandoned in situ due to cracks that developed in the granite, offering a unique, preserved look into ancient quarrying practices.
On Some of the ancient Stone Jars in Central Sulawesi, we found the same kind of Scoop Marks as on the unfinished Obelisk of Aswan. Did the ancients use some kind of advanced technilogy?
The ancient stone jars of Central Sulawesi are mysterious archaeological artifacts that offer a glimpse into the region's enigmatic past. Found primarily in the Bada Valley, also known as the Napu or Behoa Valley, these jars lie within a secluded, mountainous area of lush forests. They share a resemblance with the stone jars found in Laos' Plain of Jars, but their exact origins and purpose remain uncertain.
Dating back thousands of years, these jars are thought to have been used as burial containers, though this hasn’t been confirmed. They vary greatly in shape and size—some standing over two meters tall—and are carved from volcanic stones like andesite or basalt, highlighting the impressive skill and labor involved. While some jars are smooth and cylindrical, others have rough, irregular shapes. Nearby, one can also find other megalithic structures, including statues that depict human and animal forms, adding to the mystique of the area.
Local legends suggest that ancient peoples with supernatural abilities created these jars, or that they served as vessels for ancestral spirits. Though no written records exist to explain their purpose, these jars remain a key part of Central Sulawesi's cultural heritage, drawing the attention of researchers fascinated by Indonesia's megalithic traditions and prehistoric cultures.
