(7 Aug 2021) A head of the company that makes beds for the Olympic Village said he was "very happy" to see viral videos, where Olympic athletes were jumping on recyclable cardboard beds to test their durability.
So-called "anti-sex beds" went viral when speculations went around on social media, questioning the structural rigidity of the beds to be unable to accommodate more than one person.
Ireland gymnast Rhys McClenaghan posted a video on July 18, in which he debunked the speculations as "fake news," after jumping on the bed.
"The viral video was kind of so funny, many athletes doing the same thing,"Motokuni Takaoka, CEO of airweave inc. told The Associated Press on Friday, adding that the bed can stand about 200 kilograms (440 lbs).
He thanked all the athletes, including the Israeli baseball team that recently tried out the durability of the bed by nine teammates jumping at the same time, and ended up breaking the bed.
"I say thank for them for proving the strength of the product," said Takaoka.
The single bed frames will be recycled into paper products after the games.
The mattress components made of plastics will be also recycled into plastic products.
The mattress is divided into three distinct sections, which athletes can tailor the firmness according to their weight and body shape.
Since Takaoka founded the company in 2004, the company has been pursuing a "clean and eco-friendly" bed, which came under the spotlight following the COVID-19 pandemic.
He said he hopes to improve the quality of athletes' sleep in future Games.
