Seattle Police Officers Guild President Kent Liu says officers are increasingly frustrated by policies that make it difficult to book suspects into the King County Jail, even in cases involving open-air drug use and other quality-of-life crimes. Liu argues that county procedures, medical screening requirements, and the inquest process create barriers that prevent officers from effectively addressing public safety concerns.
According to Liu, Seattle police often must transport suspects to hospitals for extended observation periods before they can be booked into jail, adding to officer workload and limiting enforcement efforts. He also criticized King County's inquest system, calling it costly and time-consuming for taxpayers.
The comments come as Seattle continues to face officer shortages despite offering some of the highest starting salaries for police officers among major U.S. cities. Liu says low morale and frustrations with the criminal justice system continue to hamper recruitment efforts.
