We’re diving into one of the strangest bits of coastal folklore to ever wash up on our shores. Back during the Napoleonic Wars, a French ship was wrecked in a howling gale. The only survivor? A poor little Capuchin monkey, dressed in a full French uniform to amuse the crew.

When the locals found him on the sand, things went south (or North, in this case). Having never seen a Frenchman OR a monkey before, and noticing the prisoner was being a bit tight-lipped during the trial, they did the only logical thing: they found him guilty of spying and sentenced him to the rope!

Is it a Cornish tale? Well, you know how it is—Mevagissey, Boddam, and Greenock all have their own versions of the "Monkey Hangers" legend. But we have to hand it to the folk up in Hartlepool; they’re the ones who truly took the story to heart. They’ve even got a monument to the little lad on the Headland!
