Perhaps more than any other brand, Pure Blue Japan (PBJ) is known for their irregular, knotty, hairy, neppy denim. That means it's rough and fuzzy to the touch, demonstrating the very old fashioned method of making the jeans. This denim is human, and it tells a story.

I grabbed the NP-019, which has a relaxed tapered fit that suits my big ass and thighs.

DENIM
17oz heavyweight denim
Dyed before weaving with powdered natural indigo
Constructed from American cotton
Feels like a suit of armor made from carpet
Has great fade potential
Indigo warp, undyed weft

This is the kind of denim that just has character.

DETAILS
Indigofera leaf stamped on the butt
Waist patch made from deerskin
Patch depicts a guy dipping jeans in a vat of indigo dye
Which is awesome
Iron buttons with indigo leaf detail
Light blue selvedge ID

It's also held together with long stitches, which is super hard to do and PBJ uses very modified sewing machines to do it. Practically no one will notice this, but it's one of the many touches that elevate these jeans.

CARE
Everyone has different opinions, it looks like you can machine wash, hand wash, or soak
Don't dry clean them
Color will definitely bleed in water, wash it on its own
Apparently they should be stored in a well ventilated area

FIT & SIZING
I'm normally a size 32, but the 34 fit me fine.
Will stretch in the first few weeks. They were too tight when I bought them, perfectly wearable the next day, and I started wearing a belt after a month.

PRICE
About $390 with taxes in store, but they're $290 on Okayama.

PROS
Very solid, sturdy construction
No loose threads, really clean stitching, even after a month of wear
Great iron buttons
Dyed with natural indigo
Fantastic fade potential
Super slubby and neppy

CONS
Too warm for mid-year wear
So thick that they're not great for mobility
They'll stretch a good couple of inches in the waist, just be prepared
Some think the leaf on the butt looks like a stain
