In this latest installment of Fresh Finds, Long Island, NY-based hickory golfer Christian Williams shares some of the highlight finds from a recent purchase of 19th century hickory golf clubs from an antique dealer in Norway. Williams is a golf historian with a high handicap, sharing his passion for the game through this channel where he shows how to collect, repair, and play with antique, wood-shafted golf clubs. Welcome to the channel!
This purchase of 19th century "gutty golf" clubs took place via a video call through Facebook Messenger. The seller, Heine Skarlund, is an antique dealer based in Norway who is helping a client sell his 900-plus collection of antique wooden-shaft golf clubs. The collection spans a wide date range of hickory-era golf clubs and this video focuses on the purchase of thirteen circa-1900 and earlier golf clubs that would have been used to play "gutty golf" - the style of golf played prior to 1900 that used a ball made from solid gutta percha. Prior to the invention of the rubber-core Haskell golf ball in 1898, the golf clubs used to propel the gutta percha were heavier and larger than the clubs eventually manufactured to suit the further-flying Haskell ball.
Several of the clubs featured in this video will be refurbished and included in playable gutty golf club sets. Reach out to Christian Williams via email at [email protected] if you're interested in purchasing one of these sets.
And if you'd like to coordinate a video call with Heine to purchase clubs from the collection, please reach out Williams and he'll facilitate an introduction.
