The Pledge of Hudaybiyyah is a significant event that took place in 628 CE (6th year of Hijrah) near Hudaybiyyah, where an agreement was made between the Muslims and the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. The event began when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), along with around 1,400 of his companions, set out for Mecca with the intention of performing Umrah (the minor pilgrimage). The Muslims' purpose was solely to worship, without any intent for conflict or war. However, the Quraysh, suspecting the Muslims' motives, decided to prevent them from entering Mecca and stopped them near Hudaybiyyah.
To resolve the situation peacefully, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent an emissary, Hazrat Uthman, to negotiate with the Quraysh in Mecca. While he was there, a rumor spread that Hazrat Uthman had been captured and killed. In response to this, the Muslims gathered around the Prophet and pledged their allegiance to him, vowing to remain loyal and, if necessary, to fight for the cause. This pledge is known as the "Pledge of Ridwan" or the "Pledge of Hudaybiyyah."
Later, it was discovered that Hazrat Uthman was unharmed, and soon afterward, the Quraysh agreed to negotiate with the Muslims. The two sides reached a truce known as the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, which allowed for peace over the next ten years. Though the Muslims were not permitted to enter Mecca that year, the treaty guaranteed that they could return the following year for Umrah.
The Treaty of Hudaybiyyah was a diplomatic victory for the Muslims, as it allowed them to spread Islam peacefully and created a favorable environment for growth. It demonstrated the Muslims’ commitment to peace and patience, while also highlighting the Quraysh's initial resistance to peaceful coexistence.
