Intubation involves the placement of a flexible tube, called an endotracheal tube, into a patient's trachea to help them breathe. The laryngoscope is used to lift the patient's tongue and soft tissues of the throat, allowing the medical professional to view the larynx and guide the endotracheal tube into the trachea. Intubation is often necessary for emergencies, surgery, or when a patient cannot breathe independently.
