Much is said about U.S.-China competition over Africa’s critical minerals, but the reality on the ground looks very different.
While the narrative frames cobalt and other resources as contested, the scale of investment tells another story. Chinese state-owned and private companies have poured billions into Zambia, the DRC, Zimbabwe, and beyond, dwarfing Western involvement.
Deals like Tsingshan Holding Group's $800 million investment in Zambia underscore the significant imbalance in the playing field. With U.S. and Western firms largely absent from large-scale projects, can we really call it competition, or is China simply operating in a league of its own?
