Welcome to Sugé!
Alpha Oulare founded his still active ensemble “Sugé” in Berlin in 2000 to give new expression to the traditional music of his home country and nation Guinea, with songs from the Mandinke and Suso traditions.
The Sugé is a tree that can be found throughout Guinea and is also known as the 'tree of life': its fruit is popular in Guinea because it provides a lot of strength. “Sugé” stands for the positive influence that comes from nature. In addition, "Sugé" is also the name of an old Guinean song that expresses the need for protection from negative things, that happen in our lives, today, still in this one century: racism, violence, war, disease ... As a group, »Sugé« represented themselves as that new generation of Guineans who mix traditional Mandinke, Suso and Griot music with their own style.
