Mid-season tea pruning in the greenhouse. Topping the plants at this stage does several key things: It encourages the plants to lateralize; it lessens the bioburden of extra foliage in the heat of summer (nutrients are focused in the main/base of the plant; it decreases aphids (they like the tender leaves we’re removing); and it allows time for new growth to harden off prior to winter (vs. topping after first frost). I’m sure there’s more than it does, but that gives you the idea 😎.
