However, in many cases, it is necessary to use contrast agents to properly distinguish between healthy and diseased tissues. Currently, the contrast agents used in clinics are based on gadolinium. Although this compound has a long safety record, it can cause adverse effects in some cases.

Gabriela Guedes, a researcher at the Center for Cooperative Research in Biomaterials (CICbiomaGUNE), is working on developing alternative, safer, and more efficient contrast agents based on proteins.
