Whether you gained weight or need to pad out a dressform for the first time, this tutorial on padding out a dress form will help you sculpt your dress form to fit your specific measurements. Measurements are extremely important for padding out dress forms, so make sure you take accurate measurements and have someone help take your measurements if you're having trouble. Measure your bust, overbust, and underbust for the most accurate bust measurements. Measure you natural waist as well as the narrowest and widest parts of your waist. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart to measure your hips and butt. If your dress form has legs like mine does, you can also measure your thighs.

I used polyester batting instead of quilt batting to pad out my dress form because it is more easily sculpted the way you would sculpt with clay. This batting will help you more accurately sculpt your fat folds into your dress form. I was able to fully pad out my dress form to fit my new measurements after gaining weight due to health issues using this tutorial for padding out dressforms.

I highly recommend using an old bra that fits well as a base layer for the bust of your dress form while padding it out. Since I don't have access to an old bra that fits, I cloned my best fitting bra for my dressform. I used an unlined bra with a 3-piece cup which is ideal for drafting your own bra pattern. I traced my bra pattern pieces using a plastic bag, and constructed my bra using scrap fabric. I sewed my bra pieces together in the best way I could figure out, and even included channeling, elastic, and plastic boning to give structure to my bra. And my bra cloned perfectly! My cloned bra helped me perfectly pad out the bust of my dress form to accurately fit my body measurements.

You can also sew a simple cover for your dress form by using a few yards of stretch knit fabric, pinning a seam allowance along the side of your form, and sewing it with a zig-zag stitch or serger.
