One of the most famous and ancient of the English "ballad carols." This beloved arrangement by Sir David Willcocks, a defining figure in 20th-century choral music, brings a sophisticated yet accessible sparkle to the traditional melody.
The carol tells an apocryphal story from the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. When Joseph, in a moment of human doubt, refuses to pick cherries for Mary, the unborn Christ child speaks from the womb, commanding the tree to bow down so she may gather the fruit. Willcocks’ arrangement masterfully captures the dialogue and the miraculous nature of the story, ending with a joyful, dance-like energy that echoes through the aisles of Southwark Cathedral.
Recorded live during a Christmas concert at Southwark Cathedral by The Merbecke Choir, conducted by Emily Elias.
