This Alliant Power Tech Tip video walks viewers through diagnosing a 2005 Ford F250 with a 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine that has hard starting and rough running issues. The technician, Mike Wagner, uses a systematic 12-step diagnostic guide developed by Alliant Power. [00:34], [01:13] The process includes:
✅Initial Checks: Verifying the customer's complaint, performing a visual inspection of the engine compartment (hoses, battery cables, wiring harness), and checking fluid levels (oil, coolant). [01:24], [02:11], [02:55]
✅Intake & Exhaust Inspection: Checking the intake system for restrictions or damage, including the air filter, and inspecting the exhaust system for any damage that could cause restrictions. [03:21]
✅Fuel System Diagnostics:
-Verifying fuel level and checking the fuel filter for contaminants. [05:10]
-Testing fuel supply pressure, including checking voltage at the Horizontal Fuel Conditioning Module (HFCM). [05:22]
-Checking the fuel supply system for restrictions using a vacuum gauge. [06:42]
✅Scan Tool Diagnostics (Ford IDS):
-Scanning for history and current fault codes. [07:38]
-Performing Key On Engine Off (KOEO) self-tests, including an injector electrical self-test. [07:59]
-Monitoring specific engine parameters at idle (battery voltage, FICM voltage, ICP, IPR, fuel pulse width, EGR position). [08:20]
-Performing a cylinder power balance test and an injector contribution test to identify underperforming cylinders. [09:12]
✅Bubble Test: This test checks for compression leaking past the injectors into the fuel supply by observing bubbles in the secondary fuel filter housing while cranking the engine. [10:02]
✅Diagnosis & Repair: Based on the tests, particularly the failed contribution test on several even bank cylinders and the presence of bubbles in the fuel, it was determined that compression was leaking past one or more injectors on the driver's side. [11:12] Upon removal and inspection, the number four injector was found to be the culprit. [12:01] Due to damage to the other injectors from compression gases, all four injectors on that bank were replaced with new Alliant Power remanufactured injectors. [12:21], [12:28] The engine oil, oil filter, and fuel filters were also changed. [12:47]
✅Post-Repair Verification: Fault codes were cleared, the engine was started, and the cylinder power balance test was re-run to confirm the fix. [13:00] A test drive confirmed the original complaints were resolved. [13:38]
