I caught the ferry from Bali across to Banyuwangi in East Java and spent the day walking the streets, meeting locals and seeing what life is like just 3km from Bali's doorstep. I got invited into a stranger's home, found the grave of a local legend, watched a guy magnet fishing in the river, broke the fast with locals during Ramadan and explored everything from the backstreets to the Alun-Alun to Pantai Boom. This place is nothing like Bali and that's exactly why I went.
