Why This Highway Sits on Water, Not Land

When you drive Interstate 90 across Lake Washington, it feels like any other major urban freeway. The ride is smooth, the lanes are wide, and traffic moves like it always has. But underneath that pavement is one of the strangest pieces of highway engineering in America: a floating bridge system that does not stand on the bottom of the lake at all.
In this episode of Beyond the Exit, we look at how Seattle and Washington State solved one of the region’s most difficult transportation problems with a solution that once sounded almost absurd. We trace the story from the original floating bridge concept, through the growth of the corridor, to the shocking 1990 sinking of the old span during rehabilitation work, and finally to the modern crossing that still carries Interstate 90 today.
This is the story of Lake Washington’s floating bridges: a crossing built on buoyancy, held in place by anchors, tested by failure, and rebuilt into one of the most unusual highway corridors in America.
