Hindus in Madurai, India, wrangled raging bulls at the traditional bull-taming festival, "Jallikattu,” during the celebration of Pongal, Wednesday, January 15.
The aim of Jallikattu is to dominate and tame bulls, rather than kill them, and grab bundles of money or treats tied to their specially sharp horns.
Judges were on the scene to make sure the participants do not commit abuse the bulls and ensure operation within legal limits.
India’s top court outlawed the sport in 2014, claiming it to be cruel and not in keeping with the country’s non-violent traditions. However, the state government of Tamil Nadu passed a bill in 2017 allowing for the traditional sport, under strict legal guidelines. (REUTERS)
