In ancient Greece, philosophers like Socrates described homes designed to capture winter sun and block summer heat. The Romans engineered massive heating systems like the Hypocaust to warm bathhouses the size of stadiums. In Persia, builders constructed massive desert refrigerators known as Yakhchal that kept ice frozen through scorching summers using nothing but thick walls and natural airflow.

The same principle still works today. By using earth as insulation — building partially underground, adding earth berms against exterior walls, or directing air through underground tubes — homes can tap into the ground’s constant temperature to stabilize indoor climates with little or no mechanical heating and cooling.
