In this exercise, you'll be doing:
Slides on E
Ma to Nay
Mourning Dove
Ya Holds
Va to Ha Staccato
Chromatic Scale
Duration: 16:06
Key Points:
Shift your placement on the Ma to Nay. The Ma should have a more dramatic, darker quality. Nay should sound brighter, a bit more nasal! You want to go for the dramatic change in this.
Check in with yourself after the Mourning Dove...how is this exercise feeling to you now? Focus on managing your air and your energy.
You should feel the muscles in your torso engaging and slightly pulsing on the Va to Ha Staccato, but they should not be squeezing tight!
Notes:
As you sing the Ma to Nay, work on dramatically changing the sound and placement of your voice. The Ma should have a full, almost darker quality, and the Nay should be brighter and more nasal, almost. We are welcoming back the Mourning Dove. You should be growing in your breath management and ability to efficiently move through this exercise with ease. Pay attention to how you are feeling through this exercise. Are your notes clearer? Are you struggling to make it through the phrase? Is there anywhere you can manage your energy and air output better? Think about these kinds of questions after doing this exercise. Feel free to change the vowel if you’d like.
The Va to Ha Staccato exercise will work the muscles you utilize for breathing. You should feel the muscles in your torso engaging and pulsing on the Ha. Those muscles will include your abs, obliques, and lower back. Engaging, not SQUEEZING! The Va to Ha should sit pretty light in your voice. No need to go heavy here with your voice, you want to work on moving easily through these notes & engaging in deep breathing. The last exercise is a Chromatic Scale. You’ll be singing 5 rounds of it, and each round will speed up more and more. If you need more time to get it down, pause the exercise and work through it more slowly. This exercise is great for building flexibility in your voice, which will help you be more agile. It also strengthens your ear training to better hear and accurately sing those half steps.
