Emerald Estates Park, Rode M5's, Tascam X6

Описание: I couldn’t wait any longer. I had to go out and give the Rode M5’s and the Tascam X6 another run. So I headed to Emerald Estates Park once again, as I knew, despite all the ambient noise, there would be plenty of bird activity and sounds. I was right.

Maybe I’m just more aware of ambient noise since I’ve been field recording, but damn, the jets overhead and the traffic noise from Griffin Road is tremendous. Despite all this, I went ahead and recorded several minutes. I discovered that it is useful, as long as in post processing I cut out the jets and traffic, and piece together several clips so as to get a good enough soundscape for some accompanying video. Not ideal, but it works.

With the audio starting to come together, I now have to focus on the videography piece. Here is where I now need to focus on what camera to use for video. I know this will depend on the subject and location, but I do need to put some thought into this. In the attached video, shot on my iPhone with its native camera, I do notice the choppiness in the birds’ wings as they fly. So here’s a perfect example where I need to use the VND filter and watch the shutter speeds.

I can tell that this combination of melding photography, video, and sound can be cumbersome, if I’m to do it right. Now it’s not just a matter of deciding to go out and capture video or stills, but now also audio. It’s looking like two tripods, all the electronics, and accessories will be part of the “kit” every time I go shoot! Maybe this will require I go out and record audio, come back another day and capture video and stills, then bring everything together in post. So this will give credence to Brooks Jensen’s concept of “gathering assets” with the ultimate goal of completing a “project”.

In any case, here is the result of today’s efforts. Not great all around, but I can see that my efforts in all this “testing” is beginning to help me develop a process.
