"Up Close: Designing the Next-Generation Sub" - Chuck Salter of Fast Company discusses the Navy's Tactical Advancements for the Next Generation (TANG) program with Josh Smith, TANG director from the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland.
TANG, led by APL for the Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS) within Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is an advanced development process created in 2011.
TANG uses an innovative approach to problem-solving and interprets feedback from junior officers and operators to rapidly improve technology on submarines, surface ships and surveillance platforms. TANG takes a warfighter-centered approach that is revolutionizing the advanced development community; it uses the design thinking process to solve some of the Navy’s challenges.
The program has brought together the Navy, APL, IDEO, and firms like Lockheed Martin and Microsoft to create a complete system that can carry an idea to implementation on board a submarine in just a few years.
