In 1966, a small shop on Vine and Walnut in Berkeley quietly reset American coffee. Alfred Peet thought most U.S. coffee tasted like dishwater, so he roasted darker and bolder long before it was popular. The founders of Starbucks learned directly from him and bought their beans from this very shop.
Today, that original Peet’s Coffee still stands in North Berkeley. Inside, there’s a small museum space with original roasting equipment and artifacts from the early years.
Street-level reflections from the corner that changed how America drinks coffee.
