Is A Short Coat The Best Option For A Wheelchair User?

I’ve had lots of people tell me to get a short or cropped coat, so I borrowed this one to try. And there are some pretty big issues for me.
While I can get this shorter length coat on while sitting down, not having my hips and bottom covered is a problem.
I have carbon fibre mud guards on my wheelchair and a special cushion that has gel in it (to give me the support I need and avoid pressure sores/blisters). Both of these get really cold, really quickly. And having them close to my body, without the protection of a coat is making my pelvic pain worse.
A blanket helps with the mud guards, but also comes with its own set of challenges. Particularly when it’s wet outside.
It’s worth noting that I’m not able to drive. So while other people may be able to manage without a coat or with a lighter jacket, this isn’t an option for me. I’m outside on the school run 5 days a week, whatever the weather. And with my hEDS, pelvic pain and Raynaud’s, I have to keep my whole body as warm as possible.
Disabled body confidence comes from knowing what you need and finding what works for you. Recommendations from other wheelchair users/disabled people can be helpful, but there’s no one size fits all when it comes to disability. What works for one person may not be suitable for another. And that’s ok.
