Matar Machli is a comforting Bengali-style fish curry made with katla fish and a smooth green peas paste. The gravy is mildly spiced, aromatic with paanch phoron, and balanced with a touch of sweetness, making it perfect with rice or Indian breads.
Ingredients:
Katla fish pieces
Green peas (shelled)
Turmeric powder
Red chilli powder
Salt, to taste
Mustard oil
Paanch phoron
Green chillies, slit
Gur batasha or sugar
Water, as required
Boiled peas (for garnish)
Method:
Remove the peas from the pods. Transfer them to a mixer jar, add a little water, and grind into a smooth paste.
Coat the katla fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt.
Heat mustard oil in a pan and fry the fish until golden brown. Remove and set aside.
In the same pan, heat a little mustard oil if needed. Add paanch phoron and slit green chillies, and sauté until aromatic.
Mix turmeric powder and red chilli powder with water and add this spice mixture to the pan.
Add the prepared peas paste and mix well. Cook for a few minutes on medium heat.
Add salt and gur batasha or sugar to balance the taste.
Gently add the fried fish pieces to the gravy and simmer until the fish absorbs the flavours.
Garnish with boiled peas and switch off the heat.
Serving Suggestion:
Serve hot with steamed rice, jeera rice, plain roti, or luchi, along with a simple dal.
