Security barricades removed from US embassy after arrest of Indian diplomat in NYC

Описание: (17 Dec 2013) Indian workers removed the traffic barricades near the US Embassy in New Delhi, a demand by the Indian government in retaliation for the arrest and treatment of an Indian diplomat in New York.
The barriers were a safety measure.
Devyani Khobragade's arrest escalated into a major diplomatic furore on Tuesday after India's national security adviser called the woman's treatment despicable and barbaric.
Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York is accused of submitting false documents to obtain a work visa for her Manhattan housekeeper.
Prosecutors in New York said that Khobragade claimed she paid her Indian maid 4,500 US dollars per month but that she actually paid her below the US minimum wage.
The 39-year old diplomat was arrested last Thursday while dropping her daughter off at school, handcuffed and kept in a cell with drug addicts, according to Indian officials.
She pleaded not guilty and was freed on 250,000 US dollars bail.
Khobragade's lawyer told a magistrate judge last week that his client would challenge the arrest on grounds of diplomatic immunity.
If convicted, Khobragade faces a maximum sentence of 10 years for visa fraud and five years for making a false declaration.
Angered by the situation, Indian political leaders from both the ruling party and the opposition refused to meet with the US congressional delegation in New Delhi earlier on Tuesday.
