Pascual Orozco (1882 – 1915) was born at Hacienda Santa Inés near San Isidro, Chihuahua. A mule driver turned revolutionary, he rose with Francisco I. Madero in 1910 against dictator Porfirio Díaz. Commanding insurgents in northern Mexico, Orozco’s forces captured Ciudad Juárez in May 1911 — a decisive victory that toppled Díaz and opened the way for Madero’s presidency.
Disillusioned when promised reforms stalled, Orozco rebelled in March 1912 with his “Colorados.” Victorious at Rellano but crushed months later by General Victoriano Huerta, he shifted from national hero to outcast. When Huerta seized power in 1913, Orozco accepted a federal commission, a move that made him a target of the Constitutionalist armies of Venustiano Carranza and Pancho Villa.
After Huerta’s fall, Orozco fled across the Rio Grande to El Paso, Texas — then the chief refuge of exiled revolutionaries. He was arrested there in June 1915 for conspiring to violate U.S. neutrality laws and confined under bond at 1315 Wyoming Avenue. Restless, he escaped custody that August, heading east toward the Van Horn Mountains. A posse of Texas Rangers and U.S. cavalry caught up with him near Sierra Blanca. On August 30, 1915, Orozco was killed in the ensuing firefight.
His body was returned to El Paso, honored by thousands, and placed in the Masonic vault at Concordia Cemetery — a courtesy of the lodge, not proof of membership. In 1925, his remains were repatriated to Chihuahua and laid in the Rotonda de las Personas Ilustres.
Hero and rebel, patriot and exile, Pascual Orozco embodied the contradictions of the Mexican Revolution and the borderlands themselves. His victories reshaped a nation; his fall unfolded on Texas soil. In El Paso’s history, his name endures as the revolutionary who crossed the line between two countries and two destinies.
