The largest one left in West Lindsey is Nettleham, a huge village on the Northern outskirts of Lincoln, between the A46 and the A158. A pretty village, this has links to both France and Scotland.

Following the departure of the Romans in the 5th century, the Anglo Saxons had a go, initially claiming the manorial rights before Nettleham became the property of Queen Edith and eventually Queen Matilda of Scotland, who was the wife of Henry I. After a short time, the manor house would come into the hands of the Bishops of Lincoln. It was transformed into a palace, fit to entertain visiting nobility. That palace no longer stands, but you can see where it was. The Bishop’s Palace is perhaps Nettleham’s most historic and well known landmark – but there are others.

The other one a lot of people will be familiar with – although hopefully in a good way - would be the headquarters of Lincolnshire Police, which dominates the Western fringes of Nettleham. It also has three pubs, a gorgeous beck, a church, lots of shops and an overwhelming sense of welcome from its residents.
