With a cold start to spring in Washington State, the tulips have struggled to push through the cold ground in most places during the month of March. Temperatures were running 10-15 degrees below normal. The snow in the Washington Cascades are running above normal with most stations reporting at or above the 100 percentile. This is great news for the valleys down stream and the late summer forest fire threat. With below average temperatures to start out the first week of April, the tulips still have managed to push through and the blooms are getting under way. Over a million people visit the Skagit Valley Each year for the Tulip Festivals, some even having delayed their plans to visit until mid April when the bloom is expected to be at least 50 percent by that time. One local farmer from Tulip Valley Farm says he could see blooms into mid May.
