To protect consumers, silver hallmarking has been made mandatory from 1st September 2025.

Every genuine silver item must have three mandatory markings:

✔️ BIS Hallmark
This confirms that the silver has been tested and certified under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms.

✔️ 3-digit Purity Mark
This tells you the actual silver content:
• 925 → 92.5% pure silver (commonly used in jewellery)
• 970 → 97% pure silver
• 990 → 99% pure silver (used in coins and bars)

Higher the number, higher the silver purity — and better resale value.

✔️ HUID Code (Hallmark Unique Identification)
This is a unique, digitally traceable ID assigned to each silver item.

To verify that the hallmark is genuine, enter the HUID code in the official BIS Care App.

The BIS Care App allows you to check:
• Exact silver purity
• Type of metal (silver)
• Name and location of the jeweller
• Hallmarking centre details
• Whether the HUID is valid or fake

This helps you confirm authenticity before buying and avoids problems at the time of resale.
