Explore the hidden dynamics behind global economic power—why age and gender shape who rises to the top, and what this means for gender equality and generational influence in corporate and political power.
▪️Further Discussion:
The study examines the composition of economic elites across 16 countries using the World Elite Database (WED). In simple terms, the study is talking about the most powerful and wealthy people in the world—the ones who control big companies, make important political decisions, and influence global markets. These people are often called economic elites. The findings indicate:
Age Distribution by Country and Gender: Economic elites tend to be older in the United States, Germany, and Argentina, with a clear gender gap where men dominate younger age groups in most countries, except in Denmark and the US where women are slightly older.
Gender Ratios in Elite Positions: The spider plot reveals stark gender imbalances in economic elite roles, with women significantly underrepresented in corporate boards, ministerial positions, and WED populations across nearly all countries.
WED Gender Ratios vs. WEF Gender Gap Index: There is a positive correlation between a country's gender parity (measured by the WEF Gender Gap Index) and the proportion of women in its economic elite, with Nordic countries leading in both gender representation and equality measures.
