Main Topic: The OSIRIS-REx mission's Touch-And-Go (TAG) sample collection event on Asteroid Bennu (10-20-20) yesterday.
This is only the 3rd time humans had landed a spacecraft on an asteroid and retrieved a physical sample rather than just remote analysis. We watch some clips videos from today’s NASA news conference showing the first images of the actual sample collection on Bennu and a demo of how the sample will be weighed in space. The TAG SAM head collection chamber is discussed. Guess the total sample weight collected!
We'd spend some time looking at samples of Tarda the brand new ungrouped C2 fall from Morocco with Juan Aviles of Jurassic Dream Fossils and Roberto Vargas. There of them are many small oriented shields, complete stones, and beautiful fragments showing fresh crust and orientation. Juan is one of the main mass holders In the Met Bull of Tarda. We are introduced to two newly approved (not published as of 10-21-20): NWA 13472, an 814g LL4-6 and Tazzarine 002, a 5.1kg H5 and personal find of Juan.
We discussed the upcoming meteorite hunting trip to Franconia Arizona (Oct 24-26 2020). A bunch of us are getting up there for a three-day camping, start gazing, meteorite hunt-fest.
Pat shows off some cool mission patches and a microscopic view CV3 reflected cross-polarized light that shows the infinite detail in a single meteorite. We play “Guess the Weight” Carbonaceous Chondrite. It weighed 857.5g. The winner is Donald Herd; right on the button at 850g!
Michael Kelly shows us a personally collected sample of Anthraxolite, a hard, black lustrous graphitic coal, and his new Balambala an Iron IIF, Mount Dooling an Iron IC. Details of Herkimer and Pakistani diamonds are cool topic.
Ron Metchis shows his growing collection Mundrabilla. The first was 187g, then 270g, and a whopping 670g monster. Hunting meteorites and driving in Australia.
A possible witness fall from South Morocco is shown off. Boy is it beautiful and fresh . You can actually see the impact mark with Earth, the exact moment that a journey taking a few billion years ended.
BTW: at about an hour and 20mins in, I absolutely lose it when Juan shows off a near-perfect bullet-oriented Taza Iron (NWA 859). I know, for a fact, that Pat wants it and he is on mute. It would match his killer Sikhote-Alin. It is not for sale – but I am still dying!! These Hangouts are educational and fun.
