Why I Use The Word 'Deformity'
Words are complicated things. I personally use the words deformity and disfigurement as I'm most comfortable with them. Other people may be more comfortable with the word disfigurement alone, or with disability - every situation is different and I completely respect that. Generally speaking, it's always polite to refer to someone as 'having' something, rather than defining them in that way. For instance, I would say that I 'have' a deformity, but would avoid saying 'I am deformed.' Everyone should be able to use whichever word/s they prefer to describe themselves. Words may be complicated things but they are also very powerful.
