Thousands of overweight vehicles cross Washington Bridge without penalty

Описание: Thousands of overweight vehicles have illegally crossed the Washington Bridge without penalty so far in 2025, an NBC 10 News review of state data revealed.

Rhode Island Department of Transportation data show 15,432 vehicles weighing over 96,000 pounds have crossed the bridge from Jan. 15 through Aug. 9, but according to state police, up until Aug. 13 only 49 citations had been issued for vehicles violating the weight restrictions in all of 2025, an enforcement rate of less than 0.5%.

The weight limit for trucks on all Rhode Island bridges is 80,000 pounds, but trucks weighing up to 96,000 pounds can cross with a permit.
