Описание:
A large fire has broken out and an explosion has been heard at a construction site in Southampton city centre.
Firefighters were called to the Mayflower Halls site on Commercial Road beside the Mayflower Theatre just before 11.40am.
A police cordon has been set up at the scene.
Several hundred workers have left the site and the Mayflower Theatre has been evacuated.
Two cranes operating on the site have stopped working.
The 10-storey building under construction was due to house about 1,000 University of Southampton students from the autumn.
Surrounding roads have been closed with traffic hold-ups reported on routes heading into the city centre.
