KALINKA.

Written in 1860 by a folklore collector named Ivan Larionov for a small-town theater in Saratov. Nobody expected it to outlive its composer, let alone become the most recognizable Russian melody on Earth.

📖 WHAT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW

• NOT a folk song — written by one man: Ivan Larionov, 1860, Saratov. He was a composer and folklorist who wrote it in folk STYLE. Everyone assumes it's ancient. It's not.

• First performed by the author himself at a provincial amateur theater. A friend — singer Dmitry Agrenev-Slavyansky — heard it, added it to his tour, and took Kalinka to Europe and America.

• The song is literally about... berries and napping. "Kalinka" = snowball berry (viburnum). "Malinka" = raspberry. The singer wants to sleep under a pine tree and asks a pretty girl to love him. That's it.

• The Alexandrov Red Army Choir made it world-famous after WWII. Their arrangement turned a silly folk tune into an operatic showpiece.

• Singers who performed it exceptionally earned the unofficial title "Mr. Kalinka" — starting with Viktor Nikitin in Berlin (1948) and Evgeny Belyaev at Abbey Road Studios, London (1963).

• Featured in the 2018 FIFA World Cup closing ceremony in Moscow — performed by soprano Aida Garifullina alongside Ronaldinho.

• Appears in video games: Tetris (NES 1988, labeled "KARINKA" by mistake), Civilization VI (Russia's theme), Rainbow Six Siege (Tachanka's intro), Payday 2 (Vlad sings it after heists).
