The KZ PRX, or purx if you are a mumble rapper, uses a planar magnetic driver, has a darkish sound signature and it is not some hi-fi iem, so dont buy this of you want to be overloaded by sharp details, the frequency response chart doesnt even matter, but there you go, you can swiftly forget it because it doesnt sound like it graphs especially after 3khz., luckily its a planar and its very eq friendly. Here is what you need to know. KZ accidentally made a seriously good subwoofer out of a planar driver so good that it brought me back to my 20’s when I was driving around with a massive 17” 20kg subwoofer in the boot of my jetta. It was the star of the show and provided clean bass, not punchy, not boomy, but clean and fast. The kz prx does the same it doesnt go pop and it doesnt peak, it goes brrr real fast, real deep, real thick and real smooth. Or if you frequent a decent cinema the bass sounds like that from their subwoofers… provided you eq it.
My first night that I listened to this I opened up equilazer apo, boosted the bass and laughed and grinned the whole night. And the night of writing this I fell asleep while listening to it, which is a good thing.
EQ and power
Last talk about eq and power! First off you dont need mo poweh baby, I tested this with over 100 combinations and 45mw at 16ohms or 30mw at 32ohms is more than enough, making the apple dac more than enough, provided its not on an android device. So I tested this on each and every device and dongle I have and I can confidently say that even with a huge negative 12db pregain for eq I can still get over 85db on all my devices, including a severely EU noise regulated xiaomi phone that the 40mw from the Fiio BTR11 (which is amazing btw) is more than enough. I Also tested this with the 245mw Fiio KA11 and providing more power had no change to the rest of the sound other than volume. Look…I get why people say it scales with volume or power, you can easily blast over 100db into your ears and not notice it, and it might sound good for 10 minutes, but dont do it, just eq it to where its good under 85db and keep your hearing. Please take this seriously. I was pushing over 90db on my first listen and did not notice it as nothing was boomy, peaky or shouty. Luckily for me I noticed it quickly as I wanted to test power sources. So yeah this does scale amazingly with volume, but so does hearing loss.
Now for EQ, First off if you are not going to EQ this then just buy something else, This definitely needs a subbass boost, no matter who you are. Now lets get to the Why. As mentioned Planars EQ way better than dynamics, its faster, its more precise and yes its even more dynamic than dynamics, pun not even intended. Things don't get as muddy as quickly and details dont get lost. You can EQ this to be both a bass and treble heavy set and still get clean mids, easily
Lets talk about the sound:
As mentioned ignore all graphs, the bass and mids are probably in line with the KZ provided graph, but the upper range is soft, and smooth, all details are still there but they are softened and pleasant. Like a double espresso cappuccino.
The bass on this is amazing, bass is deep and extends amazing into sub bass. Bass is also thick, detailed, fast, not muddy, not poppy, not peaky and its gets even better if you eq it. You will almost definitely want to boost mid bass more than sub bass and provided you eq it well it will not get muddy, boomy or shouty, you can eq this into bass head territory and beyond and still get clean mids. If you are a bass head and you have never heard clean bass or high levels of sub bass then you are missing out. Ignore the keyboard warriors saying that planar bass is not for bass heads, I love bass and I think this is amazing. Also listening to lofi on this with boosted bass can be so much fun
Mids are great and really well balanced and detailed. And yeah…thats it sorry if thats disappointing, they're perfectly fine
The highs are really well balanced, the upper frequency is smoothed, not piercing, but also not lacking details. I am quite treble sensitive and I actually boosted some of the upper frequency ranges and it still did not sound piercing. If you want a bright planar with piercing details then give this a skip, as mentioned it is detailed but its smooth, I still believe you can eq a sharp effect if you want to but you will still be better of with a brighter tuned iem.
