[NY Times] Joubert Soars to Men’s Skating Title as an Injury Sidelines Weir
By The Associated Press, Dec. 17, 2006
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, Dec. 16 (AP) — Brian Joubert of France won the Grand Prix Final on Saturday by reeling off one quad and seven triple jumps, while the United States national champion, Johnny Weir, withdrew because of a hip injury.
Kim Yu-na, a 16-year-old South Korean in her first year on the seniors circuit, captured the women’s gold medal after mistakes by two Japanese rivals. Japan’s Mao Asada won the silver medal and Switzerland’s Sarah Meier took the bronze.
Joubert was followed by Nobunari Oda and Daisuke Takahashi, both of Japan. Alban Préaubert of France was fourth in a field that shrank from the original six.
The American skater Evan Lysacek pulled out before Friday’s short program because of an injured hip. Weir complained of pain in his right hip from a fall in the short program.
“This morning when I woke up I felt like I can’t walk,” he said.
China’s Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo won the pairs, with Rena Inoue and John Baldwin of the United States fourth. The ice dancing gold went to the Bulgarian world champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski, while the American team of Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov was sixth.
Joubert’s free skate to cello renditions of heavy metal music was the same routine he performed at last month’s Cup of Russia, when he completed three quad jumps. This time it was only one, and it was less than clean, with Joubert putting his hand out upon landing.
Joubert tripled a planned quad salchow that was to be the next jump and later fell on a quad toe loop. Joubert said he was tired after four competitions in five weeks, but he has won gold in all.
“It was very difficult,” he said. “But I am confident, and that is why I could win.”
Kim performed an elegant free skate. She stepped out of a double axel and canceled a triple toe loop that was to be the second half of a combination, but was otherwise smooth and assured.
“I can’t believe it,” Kim said. “I was not expecting to win because I had a back injury coming into this.”
Asada, first after the short program, fell on her opening triple axel, again on a triple lutz and completed only one planned combination. Miki Ando of Japan, second after the short program, singled four attempts at a triple, placing last in the free skate and fifth over all.
In pairs, Shen and Zhao made no significant errors but showed little brio. Germany’s Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy moved up from fourth to take second, and China’s Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao were third.
In ice dancing, Denkova and Staviski took the gold with a free dance program to a modern arrangement of Mozart’s Requiem. Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon of Canada ended with the silver medal. Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin of Russia took the bronze medal.
