In 1987, Namco released Galaga '88 for arcades. It was the fourth and final* game in a fixed shooter series that began with 1979's Galaxian and was then followed by Galaga and the oft-forgotten Gaplus.
Galaga '88 is essentially Galaga but with fresher sound effects, more textured graphics, and the introduction of the occasional boss battle. In 1989, it was ported to the TurboGrafx-16 as "Galaga '90".
That's right.
A single game came out in '87, was named for '88, then was ported in '89 and renamed '90.
Galaga '90 is a game that didn't hit me as an essential TG16 title the first time I played it, but I found myself returning to it on a more and more frequent basis as time wore on. So alas, when I unexpectedly had an opportunity to acquire my own, original TurboGrafx-16 console recently, Galaga '90 was near the forefront of my mind as a game I wanted to acquire.
We've featured G90 on the channel once before many months back, but today we're revisiting it as the good Lord intended: on original hardware running via RF through a VCR and thence to a composite AV switch box.
Enjoy!
*Technically there was a 5th entry titled "Galaxian 3: Project Dragoon", but it was experimental and barely resembled the previous four, so in The Blocky Dad''s book, it doesn't count.
