. It’s been an ongoing conversation, pretty much since the state was formed in 1850. People are always trying to break California up – just like us, babe, but we won’t let them. In fact, in 1859, in what was called the Pico Act, California said yeah, sure, break us up, but Congress never pursued it – probably because, as this ballot’s opponents will tell you, breaking up the state would be a huge hassle. But more on that later.
At 463,328 certified signatures, Draper has gotten well over the 365,880 signatures needed to get the petition onto the ballot – though that number admittedly hardly suggests that the roughly 35.5 million people of California have been collectively swayed by his argument. But it’s as far as one of these things has gotten in a while, so it’s worth examining!
