Subjects and verbs must AGREE with one another in number (singular or plural). So, if the subject is singular, its verb must be singular; if a subject is plural, its verb must also be plural. Note that in present tenses, nouns and verbs form plurals in opposite ways: while nouns add an s to the singular form, verbs remove an s from the singular form.

PLURAL NOUNS
1. Some nouns that are plural in form take singular verbs.
2. Many nouns ending in –ics, such as acoustics, athletics, ethics, politics, statistics, and tactics, may be singular or plural, depending on how they are used.
Generally, such a noun takes a singular verb when the noun names a science, system, or skill.
The noun takes a plural verb when the noun names qualities, activities, or individual items.
3. Some nouns that are plural in form but that refer to single items take plural verbs.
