British English is the variety of the English language spoken and written in the United Kingdom. Welsh, or Cymraeg, is a Brythonic Celtic language spoken in Wales. Unlike the Goidelic languages, Welsh evolved from the ancient Brittonic language spoken across much of Britain before the arrival of Anglo-Saxons. It has a vibrant literary tradition and is the most widely spoken Celtic language today, with over half a million speakers. Welsh enjoys strong institutional support, with bilingual education, official status, and a thriving cultural presence in music and festivals like Eisteddfod.
