The Hanseatic Museum in Bergen at Finnegården 1 A is undergoing extensive restoration. The Hanseatic era is now told at Schøtstuene and Bryggen
Schøtstuene will remain the museum's main venue until they reopen.
The museum convey's the history of the Hanseatic merchants and how their legacy is preserved in Bergen.
The Schøtstuene were a gathering place for Hanseatic merchants - where they ate, held meetings and agreed on the rules of how things should operate.
In the 13th century, German merchants sailed into the bay of Vågen in Bergen.
They became known as Hanseatic merchants, and their extensive trading network spanned much of europe.
Their establishment at Bryggen helped to open European markets to Norwegian goods. This strengthened Norway's economic, political and cultural ties to the rest of the Europe.
The export of stockfish from northern Norway made Bergen Norway's only significant trading city during the Middles Ages. The Hanseatic merchants' trading enterprise has long gone, but their legacy lives on at Bryggen, in Finnegården and Schøtstuene.
The cookhouses and schøtstuene were the only building on Bryggen where open fires were permitted. In winter, these warm, communal rooms were important to the community.
