“Bimok” (碑木) – Lyrics (English Translation)
The deep valley where the gun smoke swept through,
On the sunlit slope, through rain and wind of long years,
An unnamed, unnamed wooden tombstone stands.
Far from home, the sky holds the friend I left behind,
Longing has grown moss, clinging to every knot in the wood.
The mountain echoes with the cry of a musk deer,
Moonlight flows through the night,
A lonely, weary tombstone, tired from crying.
Those innocent memories of old now bring pain,
Each sorrow has hardened, stacked like stones in my heart.
🪵 Story Behind “Bimok”
This song was inspired by the sight of a nameless wooden grave marker (bimok) for a fallen soldier during the Korean War.
“Bimok” symbolizes the loneliness and pain of forgotten lives lost in war.
Words like “choyeon” (硝煙) refer to gunpowder smoke, while “chodong” (樵童) recalls a childhood friend left behind in the singer’s hometown.
The lyrics evoke deep sorrow through natural imagery: valleys, deer cries, moonlight, moss, and stones.
Ultimately, it expresses the profound grief of losing youth, home, and comrades—quietly told through the voice of a weathered, silent tree marker.
