My father Unto Tiihonen fought in II world war.Serving in army is compulsory in Finland. Those times it was possible to do the service in German army too.
As 17 year old kid he decided to do so as Germany paid better and he was searching for adventures.
War began and as those Finns had swear oath to German army they was not allowed to leave and defend borders of Finland. They was forced to stay and formed Scandinavian section called III/Nordland.
One summer night we slept outside watching stars while he told all those stories. They were violent and exiting. One winter they used a Russian corp to point the way to bunker with his frozen hand. Spring came and corp collapsed not pointing anymore. They were hiding in a barn where suddenly grenade of a tank exploded. After smoke disappeared one soldier was sitting against wall without his head and still holding a smoking cigar in his hand.
I asked: "Have you killed people and how does it feel?""Yes a have. Quite many. In war you must do that and you don't think others as individuals. If you don't shoot you will be killed. If you refuse you will be executed. There's no alternative."He told once walking too far to a manned village when his friends shouted him going too far to non secured area.Immediately a group of people jumped behind a small heap and he killed them all and run away. He had no idea who they were.On the same village he found a first aid package. Young lady came begging for help. her mother was wounded by a bulled. Without any training father managed to get the bullet out. As a gratitude he got pair of warm felt booths."Those saved my feet. Some of my friends loosed they toes wearing cold army boots."Should had written down all those stories.
While at war my father heard Russian song called Katyusha. Song is about a woman missing her man who's somewhere at the frontier.Father taught that song to me and I remember performing it in a big national meeting where most of former soldiers were gathered.
Once on a business trip in Russia I sang Katyusha and our Russian fellow started to cry even I got lyrics completely wrong.Well...we had taken few beers. He knew the sad story and was sorry for crying like a baby. I apologized for making him cry.
In this song I have used part of the lyrics exactly the way I remember it...gibberish."Dosvidania" / Good bye / Näkemiin.
